Northern Kentucky Chamber of
Commerce Alerts Community to “Phishing”
During the
week of September 11, 2006, The Northern Kentucky
Chamber of Commerce became the victim of
an all-too-common form of identity theft
called a “phishing” scam. Their losses
totaled more than $160,000, though they
will likely be able to recover the
majority of the stolen funds.
Phishing is
a form of Internet fraud that aims to
steal valuable information such as credit
card numbers, social security numbers,
user IDs and passwords. A replica website
similar to that of a legitimate
organization is created, typically of a
financial institution such as a bank or
insurance company. An email is sent
requesting that the recipient access the
replica site and enter their personal
details, including security access codes.
“If you own
a computer and receive emails, you are
subject to attack. But even more important
is this simple fact: these risks can be
managed.”—Steve Stevens, president,
Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce.
